Depending on the extent and success of your school's recycling program, you may need several different types of receptacles at schools: for paper (premium and newspaper), bottles (deposit and non-deposit), soda cans, plastic containers, and electronics and e-waste.

The location and number of containers will depend on where and how material is generated (near copy machines and in cafeterias, for instance). Receptacles should not block any egress routes or be placed near fire alarms or in stairwells. Check local codes for any additional restrictions. A centralized school-wide recycling center may be appropriate for larger districts.

The receptacles need to be well-constructed and durable enough to withstand the rigorous demands of everyday student and faculty use. Containers should be clearly marked as to their desired contents, and be located in places that are visible, convenient and secure.
