The smell of fresh paint is actually the smell of volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, being released into the air. Most commercial paints, stains, finishes and adhesives have high levels of VOCs, as well as other chemical additives that can cause significant health and environmental problems.

The primary route of exposure to these chemicals is respiration, and while symptoms of acute exposure are easily recognized (dizziness, nausea, wheezing, coughing), symptoms related to chronic exposure may not be evident for months or even years. These include neurological problems, asthma, endocrine disruption and cancer. Pregnant women and children are particularly vulnerable to these toxins and should avoid any exposure.

Fortunately, low-VOC and no-VOC products are being produced by the major manufacturers and are now widely available at a comparable cost.

Resources:

ToolBase.org is a joint project of the building industry and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. It's a great resource for technical information on building products, materials, new technologies, business management, and housing systems. They have a page on low- and no-VOC paints.
