A coordinated strategy on energy issues articulated through a business energy policy provides an opportunity for local businesses to demonstrate their concern for the environment by setting energy reduction targets and timetables and establishing a network to share resources and knowledge about energy conservation programs, techniques and equipment.

Most energy reduction efforts begin with an energy audit to establish a baseline against which to measure future progress. Coordinated audits for multiple business customers can reduce any costs (some energy audits are conducted at no charge by utilities), as well as providing a broader view of energy use across an entire local business community.

There are literally hundreds of energy-saving programs for businesses being conducted by local utilities across the country, often in partnership with local municipalities or business associations, all designed to assist small businesses in meeting their energy reduction targets.
